Why does my bread delivery come in an old margarine box? It looks a rather unprofessional !
Here’s our reckoning:-
I went ,the other week, to do my shopping at the supermarket. I forgot my carrier bags and didn’t want to have the guilt of taking fresh ones so I blagged a waste cardboard box from the lady stacking the shelves to take home my groceries. I recycled the cardboard box into my compost bin. I used 1 box,3 times - brilliant.
Come to think of it that’s how it used to be in the good old days; our local Asda had a big crate of old boxes for customers to help themselves - Aldi still do it. It’s really environmentally friendly to re-use a perfectly serviceable box again.
Fosters Bakery make most of our deliveries on plastic returnable trays but still buy 10 tonnes of cardboard boxes per year to make daily deliveries to customers who don’t (or won’t) return our plastic ones (AND YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE … YOU … er . . treasured customers !!!!)
At the same time as we BUY cardboard boxes we throw away perfectly clean and serviceable cardboard boxes from our ingredients.
“John, you are a genius!”, I thought, “Why not re-use these ingredients boxes instead of the new boxes - they cost nothing and we’ll save rubbish fees too … Our customers will really appreciate us saving money and keeping our prices as low as we can and our children won’t hate us for ruining the planet”
IT’S OK ! The bread is in its wrapper inside the box. It’s as food safe as if we used a brand spanking new box.
Tell your colleagues what it’s all about. Why not re-use the box yourself and feel well chuffed that you are doing your bit for the environment too.

[it’s nothing to do with the environment John. It’s just because you are a mean grumpy old Yorkshire man that hates parting with his brass]
